Create the sparks leading to research and innovation: Have fun, develop ideas, invent tomorrow’s everyday life!
The Ideas Attack! Research Hour at ZIT offers Viennese 3rd and 4th grade school pupils the opportunity
- to associate terms such as “research“ and “innovation“ with specific parts of their everyday lives, thus
- gaining an understanding of the relevance of research and innovation for our society,
- getting to know the occupational profiles of scientists and
- last but not least, becoming actively inventive themselves.
This initiative on the part of ZIT GmbH is designed to already show elementary school pupils (in particular girls) the diverse range of job descriptions, and to arouse their interest in research and innovation. Our experience in the field of scientific communications has show than there is already an extensive need for information at that age. The Ideas Attack! Research Hour was started in the summer semester of 2010 as a pilot project, and is now being continued due to its great success. The numerous inventions and innovations developed by children in the first months can be viewed at blog.zit.co.at.
Procedure
The Research Hour at ZIT lasts for approximately 120 minutes. At first, a dialogue between a ZIT expert and your pupils works out what research actually is, what the job description of a scientist is and focuses on the importance of research and innovation for our lives, amongst other issues.
Following a break of 10 minutes for refreshments, ZIT makes handicraft materials available in order to enable pupils to become inventively active. No limits are imposed on the fantasy of pupils – from solar-powered toy cars to self-cleaning salad balls for guinea pigs.
